Personal statement

Dr. Abdul Samad is an electrical engineer with academic and research background in high voltage insulation and partial discharge detection (PD). He completed his BSc in Electrical Engineering from Pakistan in 2016, followed by an MEng in Electrical Engineering from Malaysia in 2018. He received the prestigious Student Excellence Award from the University of Strathclyde in 2020 which allowed him to address the insulation challenges in high voltage assets in his PhD (2024) in Electrical Engineering.

Dr. Samad’s research primarily centers on the dielectric characteristics of self-healing polymers for high-voltage insulation. Additionally, his work on ultrasonic PD detection techniques has significantly contributed to the advancement of condition monitoring for high voltage assets. He contributed in various projects involving polymeric insulation, insulation coordination, and PD detection. Currently, he is working on UK National Grid funded project “Advanced Substation Partial Discharge Monitoring,” where he focuses on developing state-of-the-art solutions for enhanced asset reliability and safety in power systems. He continues his membership with the IET, the IEEE DEIS, and the PEC, and is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA).
